141) Read all of Revelation 14 Jun 2012

Revelation is a chapter in the bible that wasn’t taught much when I (John here) remember going to church. One of the few things I do remember clearly is being taught about the rapture. How others would simply disappear and be brought up to heaven (this isn’t really in Revelation). I remember asking difficult questions about how exactly that was going to happen. Are people just going to disappear? Will they fade slowly away? Will we see it happen or will it be hidden? How did god communicate with people in order for them to be able to write these things down in the first place? Did he talk to them? Could he speak every language? Did he write things down for them? Did he use some sort of sophisticated Morse code?

But these are just memories. In reading the full book itself I found that it is much more wildly intense than I could have imagined. There are beasts covered entirely in eyeballs with six wings:

Revelation 4:8
Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings.
(try to imagine that)

The arch angel Michael battle a dragon with seven heads and 10 crowns on each head:

Revelation 12:7
And war broke out in Heaven, Michael and his angels engaging in battle with the Dragon.

Angels pour out bowls of destruction upon the world until it lies in complete ashes and nothing remains.

Revelation 16:17
The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!”

It’s pretty epic stuff. It’s pretty weird stuff. It’s the four horsemen, Armageddon, 666, the antichrist and so much more all wrapped up into 50 pages of unbridled destruction. It’s also probably the one book that everyone doesn’t know they already kind of know. Give it a read. You’ll be familiar with more of it than you might think.

    Paul says:

A note on biblical translations: The older copies of Revelations shows the number of the beast to be 616, not 666. Debate continues as to why they changed it, but they did. So every act, every fear, every superstition based on this number has only to do with mankind’s willingness to believe whatever is written by “authority”. Makes you wonder about other changes or misinterpretations like “resuscitation” vs “resurrection”, or “young girl” and “virgin”.
