351) Watch Seven Samurai (1954) 8 Jan 2013

Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954) has been called the most influential Japanese film ever made for its impact on modern day cinema (i.e. Hollywood). You’ll find the film at the top of most critics’ “best-of” lists and on the IKEA shelves of hipster film nerds across the nation, right beside a copy of Kerouac’s On the Road.

We recommend watching this film only if you are a) a film nerd b) Japanese c) have a thing for samurai’s, or d) all of the above.  If neither applies to you, I’d probably pass.

If I could make a suggestion. Seven Samurai is a masterpiece that requires your full attention. I suggest watching this movie after a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast… perhaps a power nap? To appreciate the true artistry of Kurosawa’s craft, and what he has given modern cinema, watch it during the day when you’re ready and refreshed. On a rainy afternoon let’s say. We’ll talk after you’ve watched it.

I’ve had a copy of this film for years.

    The running time is intimidating.

    One day…
